Here’s another installment of how people find this blog. I find it interesting the keywords people use to find me.
- “How to deal with motherhood” — It’s all about the balance. Balance.
- “Hate Thomas Tank Engine” — probably in reference to my post about how Thomas The Tank Engine Is Ruining My Night.
- “Popular Mom blogs” — thanks!
- “Balancing kids and housework” — this is a tough one. If you can afford it, hire someone to clean up for you. If not, then find a routine that works for you, but in the end leave those dishes in the sink if you really need some down time.
- “Car cake” — I’m so proud of the car cake I did for my son’s second birthday.
- “Leg cast, infants” — I guess there are a lot of moms out there whose kids have broken legs.
- What to do if a child eats a Lego? — Call the Dr.!

So says, Kate of “Jon and Kate Plus 8.” Last night I was watching an episode of this true and funny family that has one set of twins and one set of sextuplets (hence the 8 reference in the show title) when Kate is obviously ticked that the children were eating gum at their Aunt’s house. It’s something we can all relate to.
Kate is a Mom that we can learn from. When you watch the show you see so many techniques and Mom-isms:
- She’s organized: She has to be.
- She only makes one thing for dinner and can’t cater to the eating whims of toddlers. If they don’t like it they don’t eat.
- She’s just trying to be the best Mom she can be.
- She wants the best for her kids.
- She tells it like it is.
- She’s created “special days” for each of her eight children so they can have private Mommy and Daddy time. How hard is that when you have 8 special days and have to get a babysitter for 7 kids every time you have a special day with one of the kids? If she can do that, the rest of us can be sure to spend some special time with our children.
When I am able to catch an episode of Jon & Kate, I realize that for every day I struggle to do it all, I look at the Gosselins and remember and see that they manage to feed, clothe and entertain 8 kids every day. I can manage one right now.

Well, that’s a bit of an overstatement … actually, I just blew off his speech. Guy Kawasaki (the creator of AllTop.com, among other things) was in Orlando last week giving a presentation that I had to miss. I really, really wanted to go, but had to prioritize. Sorry, Guy, you were at the end of the priority list this week. It went like this:
1. Spend time with my son
2. Committee commitments
3. Class assignments
4. Previous commitment with girlfriends for girls night out
5. Guy Kawasaki event
OK, so I could have blown off my friends to go to the Kawasaki event, but they would have killed me, and, frankly I need the mental stimulation I get from this group of women. Had I known about the event before I made plans with my friends and the committee I am on, I would have been able to do all of it with creative scheduling. It would have been great to hear Guy speak but something had to give.
Each week I have to make tough decisions that balance my personal, work and social calendar. Sometimes my friends get the short end, sometimes it’s the family, this time it was Guy Kawasaki. In the end I just do the best I can to balance it all and hope that those I have to put off will understand.

Last weekend we were driving home after being out of town, when we hear loud roaring up above our SUV. My husband immediately says, “It’s the Blue Angels.” (Well, that’s what I though I heard: He actually said, “It’s the Thunderbirds.”) We look up, through the sunroof, and see them flying, zooming overhead. They are doing tricks in the sky and cars are lining up on the side of I-75 to get a closer look. Later, I learn that it was the Air Force Thunderbirds we were watching.
We decide to pull over and I get out my camera. I’m no photography expert, and these aren’t the highest quality photos, but it’s still pretty cool to capture the movements of these high-flying planes.
About the Thunderbirds, from the Thunderbirds Web site:
Air Force professionals teamed together to present precision aerial maneuvers that exhibit the capabilities of modern, high performance aircraft and the high degree of professional skill required to operate those aircraft.
About the Blue Angels, from the Blue Angels Web site:
The U. S. Navy’s Flight Demonstration Squadron
The Blue Angels’ mission is to enhance Navy and Marine Corps recruiting efforts and to represent the naval service to the United States, its elected leadership and foreign nations. The Blue Angels serve as positive role models and goodwill ambassadors for the U. S. Navy and Marine Corps.
Here are some of my photos:

Look at my slideshow on flickr — if you click quickly, you can get the sense of the movements the planes made in the sky. It’s pretty amazing.
What was my son doing during all of this excitement? Sleeping in the back seat!

For Halloween last year I bought Welch’s Fruit Snacks to give away to trick-or-treaters. My two-year-old son loved them and though that I was giving him “CANDY” each time I let him have some.
At first, I thought I was giving him sugarless gummy treats and they quickly became a favorite for us. I thought I was giving him something healthy (made with real juice!) while he felt like he was eating candy.
After months of searching for these delightful treats I finally found them again — this time paying close attention to the label. Sugar. Yep, it’s in there. I’m am a bit disappointed at this revalation, but have come to terms with it realizing there are worse things to worry about than some tiny fruit snacks I give my son as a treat.
