Sleep Is My Crack

sleep_450.jpg

Let’s just say I’d rather be sleeping right now. It doesn’t matter what time of day you are reading this — if you are, and I’m awake, I’d rather be sleeping.

I’m a sleep-deprived mom of two younguns (one is still a baby at a wee 7 months) who keep me busy these days. I realized the other day how much I love sleeping. It is the best feeling in the world to me these days. I’d take it over a box of Godiva chocolates, over front row U2 tickets, pretty much anything right now. I have to work every day so I don’t get a chance for naps. “Getting lucky,” these days means my husband is going to stay up with the kids while I take a nap on the weekend.

People who don’t have kids have no idea what I’m talking about. Long gone are the days of the keg parties (I got invited to one last week and had to laugh), happy hours that turn into happy nights, taking in a 10:00 p.m. movie — heck, even staying up to watch a movie on TV. I’d rather sleep.

I’d better stop writing this … it’s infringing on my sleep time.

What’s Your Weekend Uniform?

jean.jpg

Number 10 on “Real Simple’s,” “10 Wardrobe Items That Always Work,” article is “put together a weekend uniform.” Intrigued, I read on …

women often make the mistake of letting themselves go on the weekend and schlepping around in old jeans and grubby T-shirts.”

It’s because we’re tired. We’re tired and just want to be comfortable. This reminds me of the whole Obama mom jean debacle. But it did get me thinking about what I wear on the weekends and after work.

Typically, I throw on a T-shirt and comfy shorts. I have house shorts and going-out shorts. The house shorts have elastic. My going-out shorts have a button. And, flip-flops are my staple. Usually my hair is in a pony tail too. My weekend motto is quick, comfortable and accessible.

Should I try to look better on the weekends?

The article continues to say:

Try cropped Capri pants and a fitted T-shirt in the summer; a pair of cords and button-down shirt in winter.”

I know that by dressing better all the time I would feel better. And, I’d probably want to get more done. When I wear tennis shoes in the house I always do more than when I have on slippers.

Maybe I’ll take the advice from this article and try to have an updated outfit that’s both fashionable and comfortable … as long as it has elastic.

I’ve Been Balancing Motherhood For Two Years

We’ll, I’ve been balancing motherhood for over three years now, but I’ve been “BalancingMotherhood.com” for two years. Amazing how fast the time has gone by.

I started this blog thinking that it wasn’t good enough to launch. I didn’t have the perfect layout or graphics. I wasn’t sure what I would write about every day. All I knew is that I needed to start it. It has been one of the best decisions. I have learned that things don’t need to be perfect in order to proceed. Had I waited until everything was exactly as I envisioned, I probably wouldn’t ever have started it. Instead, I forged ahead and picked a Wordpress template, manipulated it as best I knew at the time and kept writing. I’ve done one redesign and have another in the works. Progress, one step at a time. Isn’t that what motherhood is like?

Would You Work If You Won the Lottery?

Most people I know would stop working if they won the lottery. I used to think I would keep working, but I have to admit that if I did indeed with THE lottery, I would quit my day job. I would probably travel for a bit and just enjoy being with my kids while they are young, but eventually I would go back to work in some capacity. I want to help inspire women and mothers to be the best they can be. It’s why I write this blog. If I won the lottery I would still write this blog.

Why Do People Come Here?

Some of you come here for inspiration. Some of you come to learn what I’ve been up to. Others come here to find out if Anna Duggar is pregnant (in case you haven’t heard, it’s a girl).

Over the course of two years I’ve covered a variety of topics … everything from the death of a child to why I think breastfeeding is good for babies and mothers. I love to tell you about good books that I’ve read and I love to have someone to talk about my obsession with junk TV (and some really, really good TV.)

Financial topics don’t do very well, but I’m going to keep pushing that topic because as women we tend to avoid financial discussions. Many women I know, myself included, shut down when the topic is brought up. But, especially now, we must all know and understand finances. I will continue write about Suze Orman as long as she keeps offering good, free advice.

I’ve written about pregnancy and my bouts with gestational diabetes and I posted my hospital packing list that I hope is helping moms-to-be know what to bring with them when they go to the hospital to welcome their new baby.

You’ve followed the cakes that I started to make for my son’s birthdays. I swear, the last one … THE Mickey Mouse cake … I wouldn’t have finished it had I not intended on posting it on this blog. Not only would I have regretted quitting, my son would not have had his favorite cake so far. He talks about his Mickey Mouse birthday cake with great fondness and never once has he uttered the words that it’s lopsided or ugly. He though it was a masterpiece!

All the while, you’ve kept reading. I’ll probably play the lottery this Saturday — it’s my actual birthday. You’ll never know if I win though, because I’ll still keep blogging — for me and for you.

Planning Everything Helps Everybody

My husband has been trying to get a study night outside the house for three nights now. Tonight is the only night it worked out. It’s because we planned it, to the T. I knew he needed to go.

Last night, it was a disaster. It took me longer to get home from work than usual. The kitchen was a disaster. We didn’t know what to make for dinner. We watched the Space Shuttle launch, which in itself is worth a change in schedule, but had we planned the activities around watching the Shuttle we would have been better off.

So, today we did things a bit differently:

  • I picked up the kids from school while he started dinner so that we could eat on time.
  • I got a shower immediately after dinner, knowing if I waited even 10 minutes my window of opportunity would pass.
  • We told my son about it early on so he wouldn’t have a meltdown.
  • He even had his shoes on, ready to leave the house, before we sat down to dinner.

Planning to this level is how it has to be right now. With two kids, one being a baby, it’s nearly impossible to get some things done around here. With proper planning, we can do it, but the key is planning.  Here’s hoping it will go as well next week when he needs to do it again.

Tough Times When Mom Gets Sick

Two weeks ago my husband was out of town for a few days and I had both kids by myself. Not a big deal, but it turned into a hardship because I became sick with strep throat. Trying to get a 3-year-old to bed while I was feeding the baby was hard enough — add the exhaustion, muscle aches and razors in my throat, it was not fun.

Now, two weeks later, I have strep throat again. Thankfully my husband doesn’t have to go out of town so I can rest and hopefully get better for good this time.

This happens to moms all the time. We go, go, go until we collapse. We do everything. We ignore signs of illness thinking we can just make it through another day.  This is my body’s way of telling me to rest.
