Last fall I made a football cake for a tailgate party. I thought it would be fitting to share the photos now since The Superbowl is here.
I used Wilton’s football cake pan that I had previously used to make a rocket ship cake. It’s a pretty simple pan to use and only takes one box cake mix. Just make the cake per the instructions on the box.
I wondered if I needed to use a pound cake mix or a batter that would yield a firmer cake, but a box cake mix holds the shape from this pan pretty well, so you end up with a nice moist cake underneath all that butter cream and fondant.
Once you have the cake made and turned out from the pan, let it cool and put a layer of butter cream frosting on the entire cake. There is no layer in this cake. After the butter cream, I rolled out chocolate fondant that I bought pre-made from the craft store. Let me tell you, chocolate fondant actually tastes good. It’s similar in taste to a tootsie roll.
I rolled out the fondant and rolled a basketball on the surface of the rolled fondant to make pigskin-like impressions. I used white fondant for the stripes and the laces. Just place those on using water as glue.
This cake seems pretty small because it’s only one layer, but it feeds a ton of people. You can easily slice big chunks or slim strips of cake.

That’s something else, esp. the texture detail.

I just purchased one of these pans. Did you adjust the oven temp or cooking time? I read a lot of people burned theirs. Will probably do a trial run before football season.
